Does accountability begin in the grave or on the Day of Resurrection, and how did some individuals enter Paradise and Hellfire before the Day of Resurrection, given that the first to enter Paradise will be the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?

One must believe that accountability after death is real and occurs in two stages:

1. Accountability in the Grave (First Stage):

The servant is tested in his grave by the questioning of the two angels regarding his Lord, his religion, and his Prophet.

The believer is held accountable in the grave so that the accountability of the Standing (on the Day of Judgment) may be lightened for him.

This accountability is followed by recompense: the triumphant one enjoys bliss in his grave, while the loser is tormented.

The souls of believers may enter Paradise before the Day of Resurrection as an honor from Allah, and the souls of disbelievers may be exposed to the Fire.

Whoever passes the accountability in the grave will find the accountability of the Hereafter easy.

2. Accountability of the Hereafter (Second Stage):

This accountability occurs after the Resurrection, and it is the great accountability during which the people of Paradise and the people of Hellfire are distinguished.

The Day of Accountability is the day after which no one enters Paradise or Hellfire completely except then.

Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is the first to enter Paradise in a real and complete entry.

The Prophet’s seeing of individuals in Paradise or Hellfire is either in a dream (and the dreams of Prophets are revelation), or Allah reveals to him what will be in the Hereafter, either by direct sight or by insight of the heart.
