What is the ruling on placing the Mushaf or books containing Quranic verses in a child's bag that has cartoon images on it, or in books whose covers depict images of disbelieving characters; and is this considered a desecration of the Quran that amounts to disbelief or merely a prohibition?

Placing the Mus'haf or books containing Qur'an in a child's bag that has pictures of cartoon characters is not considered an act of disrespect towards the Qur'an, nor is it forbidden or an act of disbelief (kufr). We know of no evidence for the impermissibility of acquiring a book with pictures on its cover, nor for the impermissibility of placing it on top of another book that contains Qur'an. The basis for prohibition revolves around belittlement and disdain. The pictures on the bag or book can be erased or obscured. Major disbelief (kufr akbar) that expels one from Islam occurs through belittling the Qur'an or any part of it, such as throwing it into filth. We warn against excessive scrupulousness (waswasa).
