The question

Is it permissible for a Muslim young man, fourteen and a half years old, to run away from his family’s home—a family who abuses him, oppresses him, and scorns him, forces him to do household chores specific to women, and lies to him—knowing that the young man in these circumstances is ill, does not possess his daily sustenance, and has struck his sister after her mockery led to her bleeding, and he believes that his family will imprison and torture him if he returns?

The answer

Parents are innately inclined to love their children, and whatever harshness they may display originates from their eagerness for their children's well-being. Their ill-treatment does not negate their inherent right to dutifulness and companionship with kindness. A man helping with household chores is not a disgrace; rather, it is a prophetic guidance and a righteous act. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to assist his family in his home. It is obligatory to honor one's parents and not abandon them, as that constitutes disobedience. An adult, mature son can live independently, but he should not abandon his parents and must continue to honor them. If there is ill-treatment from parents, one can seek mediation through relatives or righteous individuals. If there is no way to avoid harm except by leaving the home, one can move in with righteous relatives or righteous company, while maintaining communication and dutifulness towards parents.
