How can one discipline the soul to motivate it to act?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The believer, keen on the salvation of his soul, strives to purify it by performing acts of obedience and avoiding prohibitions. When the soul falls short or inclines towards disobedience, it should be disciplined and trained, not for the sake of punishment itself. This discipline should occur after knowing the truth, and it involves an increase in good deeds or depriving the soul of what it desires, not by torturing it or burdening it with what it cannot bear, as was done by Omar, Ali, Tamim Al-Dari, and Hassan ibn Sinan. As for punishments that harm the body, they are not permissible.
