Is it permissible to perform tayammum on a stone that has risen from the earth and has been washed, and has no dust on it?

Scholars have differed regarding the meaning of the "pure earth" (al-sa'id al-tayyib) with which tayammum is valid. The Hanafis are of the opinion that it is dust and whatever is of its kind. The Malikis hold that it is everything that rises from the earth's surface from its components. As for Al-Shafi'i and Ahmad, they restricted it to dust, and they supported their view with hadiths, including: "And its dust was made a means of purification for us," and "Dust was made a purifier for me." This last opinion is the most preponderant.

Accordingly, if there is dust clinging to the rock, then tayammum on it is valid by consensus. Otherwise, it is a matter of dispute, and the preponderant view is that it is not valid.
