Is it permissible to combine different Aḥruf (recitation modes) and Qira’at (recitations) simultaneously, such as reading with Imālah while shortening al-Munfaṣil and joining Mīm al-Jam‘? And what is the proof for prohibition if it was established from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him? And is one sinful for reciting without the rules of Tajwīd, and what is the opinion of the jurists on this, and what are the references that can be consulted?
Scholars are of the opinion that it is not permissible to combine different recitations (qira'at) within a single verse or verses that are semantically linked, because preserving the meaning is obligatory, and differences in recitations might lead to differences in meaning. Furthermore, recitation is a continuous tradition (Sunnah Muttaba'ah). An exception to this is combining them for the purpose of study and teaching.
Likewise, beautifying the recitation of the Qur'an (tajwid) is obligatory by the consensus of scholars, based on Allah's saying: "And recite the Qur'an with [proper] recitation" (73:4). This is further evidenced by Ibn Mas'ud's disapproval of someone who did not extend the word "lilfuqara" (for the poor), which indicates that recitation, in their view, is a continuous tradition.
