Is it permissible to shorten prayers (qasr) during a 20-day trip for tourism, by analogy with the Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—who traveled for pleasure for six months? And must one make up for the missed days in this case?

The majority of scholars hold that a traveler may avail himself of the concessions of travel as long as he does not intend to stay in the country he traveled to for four days or more. A traveler is considered a resident if he intends to stay for more than four days, and he must then complete the prayer. However, if the traveler does not intend to stay, but is rather awaiting the fulfillment of a need, he remains under the ruling of a traveler even if the period is prolonged, and he may shorten the prayer. The Companions shortened their prayers during their travels that extended for seeking knowledge and jihad. There is no obligation to make up the prayers that were shortened if it was due to the uncertainty of travel.
