What is the ruling on listening to the Qur'an while not in a state of ritual purity (wudu')?

It is recommended to listen to the Quran, based on the Almighty's saying: "And when the Quran is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy." (7:204) Purity (tahara) is not a condition for listening. As for recitation, it is permissible with minor ritual impurity (hadath asghar) but prohibited with major ritual impurity (hadath akbar). It is permissible to recite along with the reciter for the purpose of learning; otherwise, listening attentively is better.
