Ignorance of the punishment is not an excuse, and the expiation for an obedient wife differs. Both spouses must repent and make up for the day. According to the majority of scholars, the husband owes three expiations for each day: two consecutive months of fasting. The six months do not need to be consecutive, and it is not permissible to resort to feeding if one is able to fast.

If one is unable to fast, then the obligation is to feed sixty poor people. The required amount for each poor person is approximately one and a half kilograms of rice, meaning ninety kilograms for one expiation. Monetary value is not sufficient according to the majority of scholars, though some permit it, especially when it is difficult to find poor people.
