How does one purify oneself from defilement?

Filth (al-danas), linguistically, means dirt. If this dirt is impure (najis), it is obligatory to wash it off the body and clothing for prayer. If it is not impure, then washing it is not obligatory. However, it is recommended to beautify oneself in general, and specifically for prayer, following the example of the righteous predecessors.
