What is the ruling on praying in leather socks (khuff) in a place where this Sunnah has been abandoned? Is this considered a garment of fame (libas al-shuhrah)? And is praying in them restricted to the home?

Praying in sandals and slippers is undoubtedly permissible, and Al-Bukhari dedicated chapters to this in his Sahih. Scholars have reached a consensus on its permissibility, and Ahmad said: "There is no harm in praying in one's sandals if they are pure." Most of the Salaf held the view that praying in them is better than praying barefoot. Some scholars explicitly stated that it is recommended to do so, in order to differ from the Jews. However, if you fear negative repercussions from people's disapproval, you have leeway to abandon it to prevent harm and to conciliate hearts.
