If a man fears temptation (fitna) from helping a woman descend, he must refrain from doing so, unless it would cause great harm to the woman, such as if she were about to fall from a high place, because averting greater harm takes precedence. However, if he does not fear temptation, it is recommended for him to help her, taking care not to touch her. This becomes obligatory if refraining from help would harm the woman and there is no one else to assist her. Touching is permissible when necessary, like one who serves a sick person or rescues someone from danger.
