What is the ruling on a man who abandons his wife, beats her, expels her from the home, and demands a divorce from her?

The reason for the husband's behavior of abandonment and beating is unknown, but if disobedience (nushuz) was not a legitimate cause for it, then the husband is an oppressor and an aggressor. This is because such treatment contradicts good companionship and character, and is considered an injustice to the wife. The Sharia has not permitted beating or abandoning a wife except in the case of nushuz, and even for these cases, there are specific legitimate regulations. The husband must fear Allah concerning his wife and cease this behavior. The wife should be patient and seek reward from Allah. If she is oppressed, she has the right to refer her case to a body that can remove the injustice from her. However, if she is the cause, she must fear Allah and obey her husband. If she is asked for a divorce, the matter is in the hands of the husband. If he gives her a choice between divorce and remaining, she can choose what is in her best interest. But if he compels her to seek khul' by paying money, he is not allowed to do so, and she has the right to seek redress from the judge for the harm inflicted. If she cannot find a judge, she may pay him money to divorce her if he will not divorce her otherwise.
