Is a person written as wretched or felicitous while in his mother's womb? And does that mean that if he is written as wretched, he will remain so in this world and the Hereafter?

When the soul is breathed into the fetus, the angel records its sustenance, lifespan, deeds, and whether it will be wretched or blissful. The intended meaning of wretchedness and bliss relates to the Hereafter, and the ultimate determinant is the ending. A servant might perform the deeds of the people of Paradise, then what is destined for him overtakes him, and he performs the deeds of the people of Hell; and the reverse is also true. A servant might be wretched, then Allah encompasses him with His mercy, and he becomes blissful. No one knows what Allah will seal a servant's life with except Him. The servant should strive for bliss by adhering steadfastly to the شرع (Divine Law) and by diligently making supplication. Ibn al-Qayyim states that Allah is capable of unlocking hearts and guiding the misguided. Even if wretchedness is written on one's forehead, Allah can erase it and write bliss. Therefore, the servant should aim for correctness and come close to it, strive in obedience, fear an evil ending, and supplicate to Allah to grant him an ending of bliss.
