What is the linguistic evidence that "wisdom" in the verse: {And Allah has sent down to you the Book and Al-Hikmah (wisdom) and taught you that which you knew not. And Ever Great is the Grace of Allah upon you} refers to the Prophet's Sunnah?

The well-known meaning of 'al-hikmah' (wisdom) when coupled with 'al-kitāb' (the Book) is the Sunnah. The proof for this is Allah's saying: (And remember what is recited in your houses of the verses of Allah and the wisdom) [Al-Ahzab: 34]. Many scholars, including Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, Qatadah, and Al-Shafi'i, have stated that 'al-hikmah' is the Sunnah, because what was recited in the houses of the Prophet's wives, besides the Qur'an, was the Sunnah. Other interpretations have also been offered for the meaning of 'al-hikmah' in these verses. The accurate view is that these interpretations are diverse but not contradictory or conflicting. For instance, Ibn Taymiyyah said: "Wisdom includes distinguishing between what is commanded and what is forbidden; between truth and falsehood. It is the Sunnah that differentiates between truth and falsehood, and between good and bad deeds." Ibn Rajab said: "Wisdom is understanding the meanings of the Qur'an and acting upon what is in it. And whoever says that wisdom is the Sunnah, their statement is true, because the Sunnah interprets the Qur'an and clarifies its meanings." This difference in interpretation among the Salaf is a difference of variety, not a difference of contradiction.
