What is the opinion of the latter-day scholars, particularly Ibn Baz, Al-Albani, and Al-Uthaymeen, concerning the skins of carrion, dogs, and pigs? And what do they say about the Hadith of Abdullah ibn Hakim: "A letter from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to us before his death, stating: 'Do not benefit from the hide nor the sinew of a dead animal'"?

The scholars have differed regarding the purification of carcasses' skins by tanning, presenting several views:

First View: All skins of carcasses become pure by tanning, except for the dog and the pig. This is the maddhab of Al-Shafi'i. Second View: Nothing from the skins of carcasses becomes pure by tanning. This is the maddhab of Ahmad, who cite as proof the hadith of Abdullah ibn Hakim: "Do not benefit from a carcass, neither its skin nor its sinew." Third View: Every skin of an animal whose meat is permissible to eat becomes pure by tanning, but not others. Fourth View: All skins of carcasses become pure by tanning, except for the pig. This is the maddhab of Abu Hanifa. Fifth View: The Malikis permitted benefiting from the skin of a carcass – other than the pig – in pure water, dry substances, and for clothing outside of prayer. Sixth View (The Strongest): All skins of carcasses become pure by tanning, including those of the dog and the pig. This view is the most preferred due to the generality of the evidence, such as the hadith: "When the skin (ihab) is tanned, it becomes pure." The hadith of Abdullah ibn Hakim is responded to by stating that it is weak (mudtarib), defective (mu'all), disconnected (munqati'), and not strong enough to abrogate the hadith on tanning, or it is interpreted as referring to benefiting before tanning.
