Is it permissible to take money for religious chanting?

Religious eulogies are a type of singing. If performed by a man without musical instruments of amusement and entertainment, and the words are appropriate, free from exaggeration or impermissible elements, and not in an innovated gathering like mawlids, then scholars have differed on its permissibility, with some forbidding it and others permitting it. The preponderant opinion is its permissibility, subject to the aforementioned conditions. However, if one of these conditions is violated, such as being accompanied by music, then it is forbidden, and the money earned from it is unlawful. Earning a livelihood through singing is forbidden according to the Hanafis and Hanbalis, and this is also understood from the Maliki school. The Shafi'i school holds that one who makes singing a profession is not eligible to testify, because it is a disliked amusement that resembles falsehood. We advise staying away from this field and seeking a livelihood through other means, especially since most prophetic eulogies today are not free from shirk.
