What is the meaning of the Hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning tribulations (fitan), where it states that the one who sits is better than the one who stands, and the one who stands is better than the one who walks?

The noble Hadith (There will be tribulations, and he who sits during them will be better than he who stands, and he who stands will be better than he who walks, and he who walks will be better than he who runs. And whoever looks into them, they will consume him. And whoever finds a refuge or a shelter, let him take refuge in it) warns against tribulations and calls for avoiding them.

The meaning of "whoever looks into them" is whoever yearns for them and exposes himself to them, and "they will consume him" means they will destroy him. "Refuge and shelter" is the haven where one seeks protection to be safe from the evil of tribulation. The Hadith has been interpreted to mean that whoever has camels, sheep, or land, let him withdraw with them, and whoever does not find such, let him break his sword and save himself.

What is meant by these tribulations is fighting among Muslims due to oppression or爭奪 worldly possessions without discerning the truth. The Hadith illustrates the great danger of tribulations and calls for avoiding and fleeing from them, for the more one becomes involved in a tribulation, the more its evil increases upon him. The preference in the Hadith indicates that the less directly involved one is in a tribulation, the less evil he will encounter.
