Where is the truth: in slandering the Mothers of the Believers, or in defending them?

Loving the Mothers of the Believers, being pleased with them, and defending them are among the greatest acts of closeness (to Allah). The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, instituted praying for them in the Tashahhud. Reviling them and slandering them is an act of hypocrisy. Allah the Almighty named them "Mothers of the Believers," and they chose the Hereafter over this world, enduring a harsh life. All of this is known from the religion by necessity.
