How can one get rid of recurring thoughts about envy and supplication? Does envy or supplication occur merely by thinking about it? And is it obligatory to supplicate and seek refuge [with Allah] every time one feels envy?
We advise fortifying oneself and one's children with the prescribed invocations (ta'awwudhat) in the mornings and evenings, along with instructing the children to regularly observe them, and completely ignoring obsessive thoughts (waswas). The greatest aid in this is to fill one's time and occupy one's energies with what benefits the individual and the Ummah, such as acquiring knowledge or engaging in beneficial work, and keeping the company of righteous friends. A program should be set for memorizing the Quran and abridgements of books of Sunnah and Fiqh, along with allocating daily time for reading the biographies of the Salaf and stories of the Prophets.
