How can I make prayer the apple of my eye, as it was for the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him?
The primary reason for not being affected by acts of worship is the lack of khushu' (devotional humility and presence of heart) during them. Rectifying hearts and turning them towards Allah Almighty is the secret to their happiness and comfort. When the heart turns to Allah, it experiences the sweetness and solace of worship, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "And the comfort of my eye was made in prayer," and he said to Bilal, "Relieve us with it, O Bilal."
To overcome this, a Muslim should: 1. Cast aside worldly worries and distractions when standing before Allah. 2. Recall that he is standing before his Lord and ponder over what he recites and repeats of adhkar (remembrances). 3. Recall humility and brokenness during bowing (ruku') and prostration (sujud). 4. Seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan when he whispers.
The khushu' prayer, performed with a present heart, is the one that ascends with light and proof, atones for sins, and makes the servant feel comfort and vitality. Maintaining prayer at its prescribed times in congregation, along with continuous struggle against the self, is the way to achieve this. Allah has promised guidance and assistance to those who strive, and the perfected prayer forbids immorality and wrongdoing.
