What is the ruling on using Snapchat filters that change the appearance of the face by adding beautifying effects or animal shapes, and does this fall under altering the "Habs al-Dhull" (imprisonment of the shadow)? What is meant by "Habs al-Dhull"?

It is permissible to use "Snapchat" filters that do not alter the human creation, such as adding flowers. However, filters that change the user's features to resemble animals, like a dog's tongue or animal ears, are not permissible, as they are considered an imitation of animals. Islam has honored humankind and created them in the best stature, and imitating animals is a degradation of this honor. As stated in the Hadith: "Our evil example is not like one who takes back his gift, like the dog that returns to its vomit."

Indeed, imitating animals and beasts in blameworthy actions or sounds is religiously forbidden, due to its contradiction with chivalry, or because it resembles a man imitating women or a woman imitating men. As for the term "ḥabs aẓ-ẓill" (imprisoning the shadow), it is a modern expression referring to freezing the image in photography.
