Is it permissible to read the Quran without understanding its meanings?
It is permissible for believing men and women to read the Qur’an even if they do not understand its meaning. However, it is prescribed to reflect upon it and ponder its meanings, and to consult books of tafsir (exegesis) and Arabic language, and to ask scholars about what is unclear. The objective is to ponder, as Allah Almighty said: (This is) a Book which We have sent down to you, full of blessings, that they may ponder over its Verses, and that men of understanding may remember.) (Surat Sad/29). The believer ponders and thinks about the meaning to benefit, and so that he can act upon what he has learned from the words of Allah, seeking assistance from books of tafsir, language books, and by asking scholars.
