Does a sick person get a reward for their illness even if they seek treatment? Is a patient's effort to alleviate pain considered treatment? Is eating beneficial foods considered treatment if not intended as such? Is it permissible for a diabetic patient not to adhere to their diet? Is a person rewarded for hidden diseases they are unaware of?
A Muslim is rewarded for illness by the expiation of their sins, whether they seek treatment or not, due to the generality of the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: "No calamity befalls a Muslim but Allah expiates their sins thereby, even a thorn that pricks them," and his saying: "No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were a prick of a thorn, but Allah expiates some of his sins thereby." Alleviating illness and consuming beneficial foods is considered treatment if intended as such. Abandoning a treatment that is certainly beneficial and would prevent destruction is not permissible. A sick person who is unaware of their illness is rewarded for it, but it does not fall under the category of patience unless they feel its symptoms and endure them with patience.
