How do I deal with those who mock and ridicule me when I greet them with "peace" (As-salamu alaykum), and call me foolish when I smile at them?

Life is a realm of trials and tests. Allah Almighty says: {Do people think that they will be left alone because they say, "We believe," and will not be tested?} and {And We test you with evil and with good as a trial}. It is no wonder that a person finds difficulty in applying the teachings of his religion, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There will come a time upon people when the one who is patient in adhering to his religion will be like one grasping a burning coal." A Muslim should choose pious and righteous friends, for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The example of a good companion and a bad companion is like that of the seller of musk and the blower of the bellows." And you must be patient with the harm from creatures, for in it is good and an increase in good deeds.
