It is not easy to pinpoint the exact date of the emergence of the Mu'tazila. It is mentioned that their first appearance was during the lifetime of Al-Hasan Al-Basri when his student, Wasil ibn Ata, disagreed with him and withdrew from him. Wasil ibn Ata was born in the year 80 AH and passed away in 131 AH, while Al-Hasan Al-Basri passed away in 110 AH. Therefore, their first appearance might have been at the beginning of the second century AH. Some researchers suggest it was in the year 105 AH.
