What is the ruling on naming a baby girl "Jilan" or "Riman"?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If the names "Jilan" and "Riman" carry the meanings mentioned in Arabic dictionaries, then there is no harm in naming with them. "Jilan" is the name of a region in non-Arab lands, and it may be applied to a profession or a group of workers; it is also the name of one of the Tabi'in (successors). As for "Riman," it is the name of a place, and it is said to be a high place. However, if the two names are foreign and their meanings are unknown, then one should not name with them. It is preferable to name with the names of the female Companions (Sahabiyat) and the righteous women, or names with clear, good meanings.
