Is it permissible to slaughter a sheep as an 대신 (alternative) for the fidyah (expiatory payment) for a permanently ill person who is unable to fast, and to distribute its meat to the poor at the end of Ramadan or after Eid?

Whoever has a chronic illness that prevents them from fasting must feed one poor person for each day they miss. Jurists have differed regarding the amount of food to be given. The Shafi'is hold that it is one mudd of any food commonly eaten by people. The Hanbalis consider it half a sa' of food or one mudd of wheat. The Hanafis stipulate one sa' of food or half a sa' of wheat. The Malikis, however, do not require any fidyah (expiation) in this situation. The food provided should be from the staple diet of the people; if meat is their staple food, it is permissible to give meat.

It is permissible to feed the poor collectively (e.g., by providing them lunch or dinner), or to give them uncooked food (one mudd of wheat or half a sa' of other grains). It is recommended to include a condiment with the food, such as meat or similar.

As for the time of feeding: It can be done day by day or delayed until the end of the month. However, it is not permissible to give it before the time for the fidyah becomes due. The majority of scholars hold that giving money instead of food is not sufficient, but it is sufficient according to the Hanafis and those who permit monetary value.
