What is the ruling on a person who deals with usury and is in debt performing Hajj, and will his Hajj be valid after his return from Hajj?
Allah has made Hajj obligatory upon the one who is able and capable, and its obligation is not waived for one who commits forbidden acts such as usury. However, it is waived due to financial or physical inability. Debts do not waive the obligation of Hajj unless, after paying them off, there isn't enough money left for Hajj. Scholars have differed regarding the validity of performing Hajj with unlawful money. The majority consider it valid and sufficient, though sinful, while Imam Ahmad held the view that it is neither valid nor sufficient. The questioner is advised to repent from usury so that his Hajj may be mabroor (accepted). A mabroor Hajj is one that is not mixed with sin, and it yields righteousness afterward. It is also interpreted as a Hajj after which the pilgrim's condition is better than before it. It is obligatory upon every Muslim at all times to comply with Allah's commands, abstain from His prohibitions, and remain steadfast until death.
