Is marriage to a wife who is remiss in her personal life, her home, and with her children, and who causes her husband sorrow and suffering, considered a trial or a punishment from Allah? And what is advised in such a situation, given the presence of children?

Marital life is not free of problems, for even the homes of the prophets were not without them. The magnitude of problems depends on the husband's intellect and wisdom. No two spouses perfectly match each other's imagination of perfection. A wise husband must bear with this, for the enjoyment of marriage comes with the presence of imperfections.

Before divorce, consider the following points: 1. You might be the cause of your wife's mistakes due to your bad character or your sins. Rectify your relationship with Allah and with your wife through advice and teaching. 2. The wise husband patiently endures his wife for the sake of his children, protecting them from dispersion and loss. 3. Consider the consequences of divorce, including the reduced chances of your wife remarrying, and the physical, mental, and emotional dispersal and loss of the children.

Be frank with your wife and advise her with wisdom and good counsel, and be patient with her. If the problem is not resolved, you may marry another woman if your financial situation permits, but do not resort to divorce.
