What is the interpretation and the rulings concerning the noble verse: {And guard your oaths}, and what are the sayings of the madhahib regarding it?

The scholars have interpreted the Almighty's saying: {And guard your oaths} with three interpretations: safeguarding them from being debased and from frequent swearing, preserving them from breaking them, and preserving them by atonement for them if you break them.

Some said: preserving them before the oath by refraining from swearing, and after the oath by refraining from breaking it, and after breaking it by atonement.

Al-Tabari mentioned that the meaning is: do not break them lest you neglect the atonement. Al-Qurtubi said: by hastening to the atonement or by refraining from swearing.

Ibn Juzayy said: by fulfilling them and not breaking them, or by atonement when broken, or by not forgetting them.

It came in Ruh al-Bayan: safeguarding them and not expending them for every matter, and fulfilling them as much as you can. If you are unable or see something better, then break them and atone.

Al-Sa'di said: by safeguarding them from false swearing, from frequent oaths, and from breaking them unless breaking them is better. All these statements are encompassed by the verse.
