The answer

Scholars have differed regarding the reason for the obligation of the Ramadan expiation (kaffarah): Is it only sexual intercourse, or is it sexual intercourse and other things that break the fast? The majority of scholars hold that sexual intercourse is the sole reason. However, the Malikis are of the opinion that it includes sexual intercourse and other things that break the fast, basing their view on the Hadith of Abu Hurayrah, in which it states, "he broke his fast in Ramadan," which is a general wording. The majority refuted this by stating that the same Hadith was narrated through other chains of transmission that explicitly state that the man's breaking of the fast was due to sexual intercourse. The preponderant view is that of the majority.
