As for maintenance, the majority of jurists hold that what is obligatory is justice in the obligatory maintenance, not in gifts and donations. A man is just between his two wives if he provides each of them with sufficient food, clothing, and housing according to what is customary. The maintenance may vary in quantity and quality between wives; the quantity of food is determined by each woman's need, and its quality according to custom and the financial status of the couple, whether rich or poor.
