What made the Messenger (Muhammad) cry during his life and after his death?

After his death, the Prophet (peace be upon him) lives a life in barzakh befitting his status, which is superior to the life of martyrs. Therefore, it cannot be said that he weeps after his death. As for what made him weep during his lifetime, he wept out of mercy for his Ummah, where he prayed, "O Allah, my Ummah, my Ummah," and Allah gave him the good tidings that He would satisfy him concerning his Ummah. He also wept out of compassion for his Companions when they were ill or afflicted, and upon the killing of Hamzah and Ja'far, and upon the death of his son Ibrahim and the son of one of his daughters. He wept when he visited his mother's grave, and when he stood at the edge of the grave during the funeral of one of his Companions, and when the verse "Had it not been for a decree from Allah that had preceded, you would have been touched, for what you took, by a great punishment" was revealed. The sound of his chest was heard, like the bubbling of a cauldron, from weeping in his prayer, and his Companions would weep because of his weeping.
