Is it permissible for a young man who does not possess sufficient money for marriage, and who has a large family, to ask for zakat from a zakat payer?

It is permissible for someone who needs the usual expenses for marriage, free from extravagance and wastefulness, to request and be given zakat; because such a person is considered among the poor. This is indicated by the words of Allah Almighty: "And let those who find not [the means for] marriage abstain [from sexual relations] until Allah enriches them from His bounty." The implication of the verse is that they are considered poor during their inability to afford marriage expenses, which permits them to receive zakat, based on Allah Almighty's saying: "Indeed, [prescribed] charitable donations are only for the poor and the needy."
