Is a woman's voice considered 'awrah, and is it permissible for her to recite the Qur'an in front of non-mahram men?

You have done well by refraining from reciting the Qur'an melodiously in the presence of non-mahram men. The softness and allure of a woman's voice, combined with melodic recitation and elongation (in tajweed), make her voice more prone to being a source of temptation in the presence of non-mahram men. Jurists have stipulated the prohibition of a woman raising her voice with the Qur'an during prayer in the presence of non-mahram men, even if audible recitation is originally permissible. This applies even more so outside of prayer. A woman is commanded by Islamic law not to speak in a soft or alluring manner, as Allah states: ﴿So do not be soft in speech [to men], lest he in whose heart is disease should covet.﴾ [Al-Ahzab: 32].
