What is the ruling on marrying a man whose money is unlawfully gained from trading in prohibited items with non-Muslims, and how should one dispose of the dowry and gifts, and how should one live off of this money?

A man's claim that his forbidden trade with non-Muslims makes his money permissible is incorrect, because what is forbidden to sell to a Muslim is also forbidden to sell to a non-believer. What is forbidden in Dar al-Islam (the abode of Islam) is also forbidden in Dar al-Kufr (the abode of disbelief).

If the money itself is unlawful – such as stolen or usurped property – then it is not permissible to benefit from it. However, if the earnings are from selling forbidden items, scholars have differed on the permissibility of benefiting from it. We advise abstaining from it. The man must repent and rid himself of the unlawful money. He is permitted to keep from it an amount sufficient for his needs if he possesses nothing else.
