How can we cite divine decree and destiny as an argument for past and future events, following the example of the actions of Adam and Moses (peace be upon them)?
It is permissible to invoke divine decree (al-qadar) in two situations: during calamities, and concerning sins after they have occurred, one has repented from them, and ceased repeating them. As for invoking it to justify sins in the present or future, that is invalid, and it is akin to the argumentation of the polytheists. Adam, peace be upon him, invoked divine decree concerning a calamity after his repentance. Thus, if blame is lifted from the servant, it is permissible to invoke divine decree, but if blame is still present, then invoking it is invalid.
