What is the era and time referred to by the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with his saying, "the dregs of humanity," in the hadith: "O Abdullah ibn Amr, how will you be when you remain among the dregs of humanity?"
"Huthalah" (scum/riff-raff) refers to the worst of everything, that which contains no good. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, indicated that Abdullah ibn Amr would remain among "huthalah min al-nas" (scum of the people). These are blameworthy traits applicable to one who has lost trustworthiness, and whom people claim possesses intellect, charm, and resilience, yet he is empty of faith.
This phenomenon was rare in the early, virtuous eras, but it will be evident and widespread in the End Times. It is one of the signs of the Hour, which will befall these "huthalah" who sift through people, leaving behind the dregs among them, who neither recognize good nor condemn evil.
In that time, it is recommended to accept what is recognized as good and abandon what is condemned as evil, and to focus on one's private affairs while leaving the public's.
