The question

Is it permissible for a Muslim who is suffering from prolonged problems and illnesses, and has begun to contemplate suicide, to consistently recite Qunut supplication in the five daily prayers with the intention of seeking healing, relief, and the removal of affliction, knowing that he has performed all types of acts of worship? And is it permissible for him to add to the well-known Qunut supplication, "O Allah, guide us among those whom You have guided… etc.," prayers for healing and relief?

The answer

A servant should have good expectations of Allah, rely on Him, and be content with His decree. One should beware of despairing of Allah's mercy, for despair is a characteristic of disbelievers and those who have gone astray. A servant must be patient and seek Allah's help.

Qunut is of two types: 1. Qunut al-Nawazil (Qunut of Calamities): This occurs in the five daily prayers after the bowing (rukuk) of the last unit (rak'ah), and it is performed when a general calamity befalls Muslims. 2. Qunut al-Witr: This is performed in the Witr prayer with the well-known supplication: "O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided." It is permissible to add to the reported supplication in Qunut al-Witr, and the worshipper may supplicate with whatever comprehensive words they wish, after maintaining the reported part. However, performing Qunut in the five daily prayers due to worry, sadness, or illness is not legislated. The greatest position for supplication in prayer is prostration (), where the servant is closest to their Lord.
