How does one protect themselves from covetousness so that they may succeed, as in His, the Almighty's, saying: "And whoever is protected from the covetousness of his soul - then it is those who will be the successful"?

Protection from the stinginess of the soul is achieved by obeying Allah's commands, avoiding His prohibitions, and increasing supplication, followed by spending in His cause. Ibn Rushd mentioned that all goodness is encompassed in spending wealth and exerting oneself in acts of worship. Abu Bakr Al-Jaza'iri also pointed out that Allah Almighty protects His servant from the stinginess of his soul by granting him success in entering Paradise and salvation from Hellfire, and this is achieved by seeking Allah's protection and spending in His cause. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded against stinginess and warned against it because it destroys nations. Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf used to supplicate, "O Allah, protect me from the stinginess of my soul," because stinginess leads to many sins.
