What is the ruling on a wife refusing marital intimacy until she moves to an independent home?

A wife must allow her husband to have intercourse with her whenever he desires, as long as it does not cause her harm. This is based on the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: "If a man invites his wife to his bed and she refuses, and he spends the night angry with her, the angels will curse her until morning."

Sexual intimacy is a right of the husband and one of the obligations of the marriage contract. If the wife refuses, her right to financial support (nafaqah (definition)) is forfeited because she is considered disobedient (nashiz). She must respond to his request whether it is in their home or elsewhere, unless it is accompanied by something forbidden. It is recommended to clean up the traces of intercourse, based on what Aisha said: "It is fitting for a wise woman to keep a cloth, so when her husband has intercourse with her, she hands it to him so he can wipe himself, and then she wipes herself."

The husband must observe these etiquettes and be considerate of his wife's feelings. The wife is advised to be gentle with her husband and respond to his right, while ensuring that other household members do not become aware of them. It is obligatory to adhere to full hijab (definition), avoid being alone with a sister's husband, and refrain from displaying adornment and beautification except for her husband.
