If a man has intercourse with his wife intentionally during the daytime in , he has invalidated his fast, and two things are required of him: making up that day (qada') and expiation (). If someone has intercourse while his mind is absent due to an intoxicant during the daytime in Ramadan, the expiation is not waived for him.
If the wife was fasting and willingly assented to her husband's intercourse, knowing its impermissibility, then she must make up the day and offer expiation. However, if she was coerced, or fasting was not obligatory for her, or she was ignorant, then no expiation is required of her.
