What is to be said to one who frequently complains to people, claiming that his complaints are intended to ward off envy from him, and that his life is full of calamities, knowing that what he says ranges between truth, exaggeration, and falsehood?

A Muslim should not complain excessively about matters he cannot change. Complaining is permissible for someone afflicted by harm, as long as it does not escalate to showing discontent or resentment towards Allah's decree. As for one who falsely claims misfortunes out of fear of envy, he has committed a lie, which is a major sin, and has contravened Allah's saying: "But as for the favor of your Lord, report [it]." Lying does not ward off the evil eye nor protect from envy. Protection from it is achieved by consistently reciting the prescribed supplications (adhkar), especially Surahs Al-Ikhlas (definition) and Al-Mu'awwidhatayn.
