How sound are the hadiths: "A man's voluntary prayer performed where people do not see him is equivalent to twenty-five of his prayers performed in plain sight of people," and "The virtue of a man's prayer in his house over his prayer performed where people see him is like the virtue of obligatory prayer over supererogatory prayer"? Are they supported by other hadiths, and are they specific to the pre- and post-BPM Sunnah prayers or to all supererogatory prayers?

There are two narrations regarding the virtue of performing supererogatory prayers at home, away from people's sight:

1. The first Hadith (definition): "A man's supererogatory prayer where people do not see him equals twenty-five times his prayer performed in plain sight." This Hadith has a weak chain of narration due to defects, including the unknown identities of "Ibn Suhaib" and "Jaber bin Ghanim" in its chain. 2. The second Hadith: "The virtue of a man's prayer in his home over his prayer where people see him is like the virtue of a fard (obligatory) prayer over a nafilah (supererogatory) prayer." This Hadith is mawquf (attributed to a Companion) and has a good and authentic chain of narration. Critics have favored it being mawquf rather than marfu' (attributed to the Prophet, peace be upon him) due to its varying narrations and the weakness of its marfu' version. Nevertheless, it carries the ruling of being marfu' because the preference for private prayer over public prayer has many supporting evidences in Islamic law, aiming at sincerity and avoiding ostentation. This includes all supererogatory prayers except those for which congregation is recommended, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O people, pray in your homes, for the best of prayer is a person's prayer in his home, except for the obligatory prayers."
