What is the ruling on a wife not shortening her hair after 'Umrah out of ignorance, and what is the ruling on one who intended to perform 'Umrah in Jeddah, then removed the 'Ihram due to an argument, then returned and completed the 'Umrah, and what are the implications of the obligation of sacrifice in either of these two cases, in terms of its type, place, method of distribution, and deferral?

Your wife must avoid the prohibitions of Ihram (definition) until she shortens her hair, even if she is in her own country. An ignorant person who commits prohibitions of Ihram is excused. If what she did was for comfort or luxury, then there is nothing upon her. But if it was of the destructive type, such as shaving or cutting nails, then she owes one fidyah (definition) for each category. As for sexual intercourse, there is nothing due if it was done out of ignorance or forgetfulness.

As for you, if you entered into Ihram with the intention of performing Umrah (definition), it is not permissible to reject the Ihram. Wearing sewn clothing out of ignorance incurs no penalty. However, if it was done knowingly, then a fidyah is obligatory, which consists of three types to choose from. If the fidyah is sacrificing a sheep, it must be slaughtered in the Haram (definition) and distributed among its poor. If it is feeding six needy persons, the Hanbalis and Shafi'is hold that the feeding must be exclusively for the poor of the Haram, while the Malikis and Hanafis permit feeding in any country.
