Is it permissible for the needy, poor daughter of a sick man to take from his Zakat al-Fitr and the expiation for his fasting, which his sons pay on his behalf?

The default rule is that a man is not permitted to give his zakat (definition) to his daughter, because she is from his descendants and her maintenance is obligatory upon him if she is poor. Two exceptions to this are: if he gives it to her for a reason other than poverty, such as a debt she owes, or if he is unable to provide for her maintenance.

Some scholars, such as Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Uthaymeen, held the view that it is permissible to give zakat to a poor married daughter if the father is unable to support her. It is preferable to give it to her husband to avoid scholarly dispute. As for the Shafi'is, the father is not obligated to support her if her husband is in financial difficulty.
