Is electronic alteration of the face only permissible?

Modifying images falls under the prohibited category of photography, and this is further confirmed if the modification is to the face, because an image is essentially recognized by the head. This is based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The image is the head; so if the head is cut off, there is no image."
