Should a widowed woman in her fifties, who had marital relations during daylight hours in Ramadan in her youth, and no longer remembers the exact number of days this occurred, fast two consecutive months as expiation for each day, knowing that she previously fasted two consecutive months, and that fasting now might be difficult for her but not impossible?

Scholars have differed regarding the obligation of expiation (kaffara) upon a woman if she breaks her fast by sexual intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan. The correct view according to the Shafi'i school and one narration from the Hanbali school is that expiation is not obligatory upon her. She is obligated to make up the days she missed by approximation if she is unable to ascertain the exact number. As for her husband, he is obligated to pay expiation for each day he deliberately invalidated by sexual intercourse, and it is to be paid from his estate. It is permissible for his guardians to fast on his behalf or to feed sixty poor people for each day.
