What is the ruling on lightening gum color with a laser?
The procedures undertaken by humans to change the color of the skin, gums, or lips are of two types: The first is that which is done to remove an accidental defect, such as from illness or burns. This is permissible as a legitimate medical treatment. The second is that which is done to increase beauty and seek adornment. This is forbidden and among the major sins, and Allah has cursed its perpetrator. The resolution of the Islamic Fiqh Academy states the permissibility of necessary and needful cosmetic surgery to restore the shape or function of body organs to their natural state, to correct congenital or accidental defects, and to remove deformities that cause psychological or physical harm. It is not permissible to perform cosmetic surgery for enhancement that alters the normal human creation. However, weight reduction (slimming) by surgery is permissible if it constitutes a pathological condition, and the removal of wrinkles by surgery or injections is not permissible unless it is a pathological condition.
